Questions
- Is PandemicAlarm free?
- Yes. The map, every outbreak record and the email digest are free.
- Where does the data come from?
- From WHO Disease Outbreak News, CDC outbreak notices and MMWR, ECDC threat reports and CIDRAP. Every outbreak lists the reports it was built from, with links to the originals. ProMED moved behind a paid subscription in 2025, so it is no longer a source.
- How current is it?
- Sources are checked every hour and the map refreshes itself every five minutes. Each outbreak shows when it was last reported, so you can see how fresh the numbers are.
- Is this affiliated with WHO or CDC?
- No. PandemicAlarm is an independent project. It summarises publicly available reports from these organisations and is not endorsed by them.
- How is the level decided?
- Each outbreak gets a level from Low to Critical based on spread, fatality, whether the pathogen or the country is new, and whether WHO has declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Critical is reserved for threats with pandemic potential.
- Can I rely on it for medical decisions?
- No. It is an early-warning summary, not medical or travel advice. Follow your national health authority and the original reports linked on each outbreak.
